Who knew: chapter 42
Sonic's POV
I completely forgot everything on that moment. I forgot this whole deal with Sally and I forgot that I was supposed to follow my mom to somewhere. All I cared about was the fact that Shadow was actually reacting to my touch!
"Shadow! Are you waking up?!" I said.
"Shadow!" I called for him.
I did it again.
I recieved no answer at all.
But I was certain he was awake.
He was staring at me.
His eyes were dull and glazed over as if he was still half asleep. He was looking back at me with only a small sign of recognition and wore a pained expression.
"Shadow." I whispered in shock.
"Sonic! Honey, you need to come quickly!" I could hear my mom's voice say. I looked behind me at the doorway that lead to the hallway and to the source of the voice.
Shadow's soft grip tightened ever so slightly. It was practically unnoticable, but it was definitely there.
"I'm coming, mom!" I called back to her before I looked back at him.
As soon as I had answered, Shadow's pained expression turned into his neutral expression from before and his eyes were closed again. His hand let go and fell back down on the matras with an almost inaudible thud. I don't know why, but a part of me in the back of my mind was telling me that his soft hold was a desperate attempt to keep me with him.
The thought went easily ignored as I pushed it to the back of my mind, finding no logical explanation for it.
I walked out of the hospital room and saw my mother waiting for me at the end of the hallway. With one last worried glance at the comatose form on the bed, I walked away and towards the end of the hall.
"What did you want to talk to me about?" I asked.
We had settled at a small table in a café not to far from the hospital. We had each ordered a drink. Mom had a cup of coffee standing in front of her and I had one standing in front of me aswell. Which was a bit strange, I usually always drank coke or lemonade as I wasn't such a big fan of coffee, but that wasn't the case today. For some reason I really didn't feel like drinking anything but that.
"You take to him, you know?" Mom stated. She had noticed the small, seemingly unimportant, change. But while I barely paid it any mind, mom seemed to give it her full attention.
"Small signs that are easily ignored, but mean a world of difference for someone like me." She said, confusing me even more.
"What are you talking about?" I asked.
"I'm not your real mother, Sonic. Not anymore." She bluntly said, not a single hint of emotion shown on her face as she had hardened herself quite a while ago, prepared for this moment.
I stared at her in pure utter shock. My heart felt like it had just been ripped right out of my chest. My own mother had just denied me!
Not wanting to say anything else to her, I just got up and left. I didn't want to face her anymore. Not after what she had just told me.
"Sonic!" Bernadette called for me, but I was already gone before she had any chance to explain.
I slammed the door closed behind me and leant with my back against it. My heart was beating furiously against my chest as it ached. My hand grasped my shirt as my teeth clenched. A growl left the back of my throat as shock and sadness turned into anger. I suddenly felt the urge to hurt something and couldn't keep myself from kicking a nearby dresser.
When I realised that I had let myself go for just a moment, I took a deep breath and tried to calm myself down. I tried to convince myself that my mom would have a good reason to disown me out of nowhere like that. Yeah. She had to have a reason.
Right?
I sighed and walked over to the couch before letting myself drop down on the couch on my back, one of my arms was covering my eyes.
I heard a set of footsteps and knew it had to be Tails. Who else had the key to my place?
"Sonic, honey?"
I was wrong.
This definitely wasn't Tails.
I pushed myself up from the couch and looked at the female mobian that now stood in the middle of my livingroom.
"Sally?" I said, confused as I did not know how she could've possibly gone into this house. Nicole could've granted her permission, but I know that she wouldn't do that without me atleast knowing about it. Not to mention that Nicole wouldn't just allow anyone to enter another person's home. Not without a good reason for.
"Sonikku." Sally said with a small smile.
"I'm glad to see you're okay after the fright we had in the park. And after what happened in the café." She said.
"What? How did you know?" I asked in shock.
How did Sally know what Bernadette had told me?
"You know... If she's hurting you, I can make her dissapear forever." The squirrels said as she walked closer to me and bent down to me, her arms slowly wrapped around my neck.
"What're you saying, Sally?! There is no way you can do that to her!" I snapped back at her.
Sally was taken back by my reaction and pulled away from our awkward embrace. She glared at me.
"Sally, why are acting this way? I've seen you scold Shadow for being in a coma which, if I may remind you, was not his fault. I know that the two of you don't exactly get along, but that visit of yours was too far! What the hell is going on! I need you to tell me, Sally!" I demanded.
"You mean... Nobody told you?" She asked while faking a surprised expression. I shook my head.
Sally stayed silent for a while. Thoughtful as she had trouble deciding weither she should tell me or not.
As she thought, thick tense atmosphere settled in this room between us. I awaited her answer.
"It's terrible." She finally said after a few long moments of silence.
"What is terrible?" I simply asked, encouraging her to go on.
"Shadow. He's done such a terrible thing." Sally said and looked away, as if she was heartbroken over something.
I just watched her and wondered if this will finally be the moment of truth. If finally this will be the day that I get the answers I need.
